I realize that I have not posted in the past couple of months, but I would like to think it was for good reason. I decided at the beginning of this year that I wanted to make the blog a priority, but I also wanted to give myself the grace to not post when the situation warranted. Well, the situation warranted about three months ago. So lets time travel back to February of 2019 and talk about the past few months.
All of the craziness really started up in the middle of Seattle’s snowmagedon this past February. Now, I know a lot of the country probably thought we were ridiculous and overacted about the amount of snow we got, but let me mention two things. First, Seattle is VERY hilly and, second, we don’t have the resources to deal with the snow. All of this to say, the city pretty much shut down when the snow hit. Like grocery stores were sold out of everything, you couldn’t find a snow shovel to save your life and there was no such thing as Uber for three days. This turned out the be the biggest blessing in disguise.
We had been looking for a house casually over the past few months, but were not seriously looking. We wanted to get through the wedding, then really start looking for a place. Well, things never quite turn out as planned, this being no exception. Because we were gearing up to be snowed in, we decided to spend a quiet Friday night at home. Riley was scrolling through zillow and found it. The perfect house to call our first home. It was just the right size, had all of the things we were looking for and included a huge lot (especially considering the area we live in).
With the help of parents and a friend that is a real estate agent, we were able to go and tour the house the next morning. Seeing it in person made us fall in love even more. It had the quirks of an older home, but the kitchen and bathroom had been recently upgraded. It was small but spacious. It had a couple things we didn’t love, but agreed that those items could be fixed or updated. And with the huge lot, the possibilities were kind of endless.
We ended up making an offer on the house that very day. Don’t forget, it was snowpocalypse, so no-one else was able to to see the house that weekend. That worked more in our favor than anything else, because they accepted our offer the next day! It was like a dream come true. We honestly thought we would not be able to buy something for a few more years because of how crazy the Seattle housing market is and how much we had going on this year. I will be forever grateful for the snow for helping to give us our first home.
Knowing that we would be moving into a home of our very own, the conversation quickly turned to decorating and updating and dogs. We knew that we wouldn’t be able to go crazy on the new furniture or decorating front. We also knew that any updates we would do would need to be DIY for at least a few years. But a dog, a dog we could do. In fact we had wanted a a dog for a while and the only thing that was stopping us was our old landlord not allowing animals.
Initially we wanted to wait until after the wedding. The last thing we wanted to do was adopt a dog and then have all of the wedding craziness happen. But all of that changed when we fell in love with a little pup named Mickey. We ended up deciding that we would figure out a way to make it work so that she could be a part of our little family. She is the sweetest little mutt I have ever met and I am so happy I get to be her dog mom.
On top of a new house and a new dog, I also took on a huge new project at work. Partly because I wanted the new experience and partly because I was voluntold I would be part of the project (lol). Without going into too many details, this project has completely changed the landscape of my job for the time being and has been incredibly time consuming. Don’t get me wrong, I have learned so much and I am really happy about all of the professional development but it has also been a lot! More travel than I had been doing, more calls, more everything. Put this on top of everything else and whew!
In all, it has been a crazy few months filled with lots of exciting life changes. But I have to admit, I am a bit excited for things to slow down after the wedding. I am thankful that I have been able to find the time again to write and want to do my best to continue now that things have calmed down a bit (knock on wood). I have been so excited and in the zone over the past couple of weeks that I already have like 6 posts ready to go for the next couple of weeks! But for now, until next time, friends… CMB
